As a parent of a special needs child, founder Barbara Lange worked with individuals with developmental disabilities for over 36 years. Barbara was instrumental in creating two Intermediate Care Facilities for the Mentally Retarded (ICF-MR homes) in San Antonio and worked as a Case Manager in the Home & Community-Based Services program before creating Yes, I Can, Inc.
Barbara's concern for the welfare and future needs of her oldest daughter compelled her to become an active advocate, not just for her daughter, but for anyone with special needs that needed someone to speak up for them. Barbara continued to expand her knowledge of people with developmental disabilities and also understood family members' concerns regarding the care of their loved ones and through her experience, she learned how to get the needed services.
Barbara's unique position as family member, advocate, and employee, allowed her to learn how to best obtain the necessary services for people with developmental disabilities. In 1997, Barbara applied for, and was granted, a contract with the State of Texas to provide Home & Community-Based Services (HCS).
After her unexpected death in 2006, Barbara's younger daughter, Sheila, continued Barbara's vision of providing a family atmosphere for individualized support and services in the HCS program, and will continue the legacy that Barbara established.
